Meeting Theme: Records Management Building Blocks

Location: University of Huddersfield

The second meeting of RMS North took place on Monday 21st March 2005 at the University of Huddersfield, and was sponsored by Diagonal Solutions. After networking opportunities over coffee, Lawrence Rodgers (RMS Executive Secretary and RMS North Chair) introduced the 30 delegates to the day. The meeting focused on the theme of 'Records Management Building Blocks', as requested by a number of delegates at our first meeting at the University of Salford in December 2004.

The first presentation of the day was given by Mike Parsons from Bramble.cc. Mike provided a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts of records management, including fileplans and classification, retention and disposition, search and retrieval, audit trails and tracking.

Dik Allison followed, who emphasised the importance of a team approach towards records management. Dik recommended that records management project teams should be representative of the organisation at all levels, including line departments, internal audit, IT, senior management and operational staff. Dik also stressed that it doesn't matter how much time, effort and money organisations spend on high-level projects such as portals and customer relationship management - if the organisation hasn't addressed the underlying information and records, then the project is "doomed to failure".

The final presentation of the day was given by Simon Baumber from Diagonal Solutions. Simon introduced delegates to EDRMS, and its relationship to enterprise content management. He discussed the core functionality of EDRM systems, and provided delegates with guidance on choosing a fit for purpose system.
