RMSI Joint meeting with Society of Archivists, 21 August 2008 Dublin
Preparing for the Worst: 'Business Continuity and Disaster Planning' was the title of the second annual joint meeting of the Society of Archivists and Records Management Society Ireland groups on Thursday 21 August, in the National Library, Dublin. The meeting was sponsored by the two regional groups and by Harwell Document Restoration Services.
The importance of business continuity in the face of disaster was the theme of the day. What to do when you receive the news in the middle of the night that your building and document store have been flooded or that a nearby fuel depot has exploded and your building is on fire? Do you have a plan which sets out how to access your site, assess the damage and loss, deal with your insurers, ensure that the business is up and running as soon as possible, that staff have a physical workspace with access to their documents and computers. Do you have a plan for recovering your collections?
The key message was that preparation is everything and that means a Disaster Plan or a Business Continuity Plan must be in place. The speakers outlined how to develop the plan.
Professionals can help you; document recovery services, business continuity consultants and conservators can all provide advice and service, but ultimately it is the responsibility of every organisation to have a plan for a disaster situation. Apparently we will all experience one eventually.
Speakers included Emma Dadson (Harwell), Lawrence Rodgers (Information Management Consultants), and Adrian Kennedy (professional conservator) as well as disaster survivors Joanne Rothwell (Waterford County Archives) and Fiona Wilbraham (Stirling Council).
