LGCRS - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the LGCRS?

The LGCRS is an on line, web-based records retention tool. Retention data has been fitted into the framework of the Local Government Classification Scheme using the first three levels of the LGCS.

What areas does the LGCRS cover?

The LGCRS will eventually cover the whole country, currently the LGCRS covers England. The review process is still underway and when the sections relating to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have been reviewed the LGCRS will cover the whole country.

What is happening to the LGCS?

There are no current plans to review the LGCS, however, once the review of the LGCRS has been completed, it is possible that a review of the LGCS framework will be considered.

What does the LGCRS contain?

The LGCRS contains retention periods which have been taken from relevant legislation which has been checked by the Genuine Group.

What does the LGCRS not contain?

The LGCRS does not contain any retention periods which are based on “best practice”, non-regulatory guidelines or those which have been developed and agreed within individual organisations.

Will the legislation be kept up to date?

The legislation in the database will be reviewed and kept up to date by Genuine Group for at least the next 3 years.

How do I get access to the LGCRS?

You must be a member of the RMS or the esd group to be able to access the LGCRS. If you are a member please visit the LGCRS page in the Member Area. If you are not a member, click here to can find out about all the benefits of membership.

Is the LGCRS available to esd members?

It has been agreed that the LGCRS will be available for members of the esd-group.

What happens if I can’t access to the members web site?

You will not be able to fill in the on line application form for membership and access the LGCRS on the same day.

Is the LGCRS mapped to other vocabularies such as the IPSV?

The LGCRS is mapped to UK legislation and regulations, IPSV (Integrated Public Sector Vocabulary) and LGSL (Local Government Service List)

What will happen to the Records Management Toolkit for Schools?

The Records Management Toolkit for Schools will continue to be freely available via the RMS web site.
