Jayne Thompson-Webb, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Jayne Thompson-Webb

Jane decided that she wanted to be a conservator after visiting an exhibition about conservation in Bristol when she was a teenager. She trained as an archaeological conservator in Cardiff and became a self-employed objects conservator. She worked on a wide range of material, including geological specimens and was involved in a three year project to conserve marine reptiles at Whitby Museum that was a runner up in the conservation awards.

Collection Care came to the fore in 2002 when she became the conservator on the project to re-locate Birmingham’s science and industry collection of 40,000 objects ranging from pen nibs to drop hammers. In 2003 she became a Collection Care Officer at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, funded by the Renaissance in the Regions programme. In this post she was responsible for collection care across Birmingham’s 5 historic properties and co-ordinated a programme of training and advice on collection care for museums in the West Midlands. In 2009 she became Head of Collection Services at Birmingham Museum, responsible for co-ordinating conservation and technical activities across the service.
