Improving Museum Records Management: A case study of the London Museums Hub

Conference 2010 S22 - Tuesday 11.30am

Since 2007, the London Museums Hub's Information and Records Project has aimed to assess and evaluate current records management practices and develop a strategy for improvements across the region. The session will discuss the aims and outputs of the project to date and evaluate its success over three phases of a ground-breaking programme.

Critical to the project was making a business case for embedding records management as a core museum function, handling the resulting change management and disseminating 'products' outside the Hub museums across the London region. Phase One (2007-2008) comprised an information audit and records survey across the four Hub museums (Museum of London, Geffrye Museum, Horniman Museum and the London Transport Museum) and one small regional museum to produce a strategic report on the state of records management. The project also introduced free regional training workshops for museum staff. Phase Two (2008-2009) implemented Action Plans based on the strategic report, developed a free e-learning tool and explored how information management could benefit museums via a series of workshops and the development of an Information Management Toolkit, to be launched in October 2009. The Phase Three (2009-11) programme consists of a capacity-raising effort across the London region via delivery of consultancies to smaller museums on records management practices and procedures, as well as delivery of wider training workshops and other tools.
