How to Undertake a Records Audit Using Limited Resources

Conference 2010 S08a - Monday 11.30am

A records audit is the basis on which to build an effective records management environment. Undertaking a records audit is additionally vital for complying with information rights legislation through providing information on where records are held. In this session Alex will explain how to undertake a records audit with limited resources of time, people and money. The session will focus on:

  • A successful tried and tested methodology to enable staff to undertake a records audit, with limited direct assistance by information management processionals.
  • Why organisations should use a database to gather information.
  • Why information from the audit needs to be kept up to date.
  • How to use effective communication and training (face to face and online) to ensure staff complete the records audit effectively.
  • How information gained from the audit can be used to develop a key records management programme and get buy in from senior managers.
  • A brief discussion will take place on the benefits and risks of following this methodology.
