Transformation through research? The AC+erm Project
AC+erm—Accelerating the pace of positive Change in electronic records management—is a research project being conducted by the School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences at Northumbria University from 2007-2009, under the leadership of Prof Julie McLeod.
AC+erm investigates and critically explores issues and practical strategies to support accelerating the pace of positive change in managing electronic records. Using a combination of e-Delphi studies and face-to-face colloquia in the UK, it engages professionals and academics from multiple disciplines and different stakeholder groups.
It is being conducted in phases, beginning with a comprehensive systematic literature review and followed by an investigation of the three facets listed below, and focuses on designing an organisational-centred architecture from three perspectives:
(i) people, including vision, awareness, culture, drivers and barriers; [Summer 2008]
(ii) working practices including processes, procedures, policies and standards; [Autumn 2008]
(iii) technology in terms of the design principles for delivering effective recordkeeping. [Spring 2009]
This paper will briefly review the development of the project and present interim findings from the SLR, the e-Delphi studies, and the colloquia. As the bulk of the data collection will have been accomplished, the findings and results from the first two phases will represent a significant body of work by the time of the conference.
The paper will focus extensively on Phase (i) and to a lesser extent on Phase (ii), and will carry out part of the project’s mission to engage in continuous dissemination of material to help inform practice ‘in the field’.
By presenting our findings to an informed group of peers, it should also play a part in generating critical discussion and development of thought, and help to move towards a symbiosis of research and practice.
To maximise the opportunity for discussion, this conference session will also incorporate a workshop session, where delegates can participate actively in adding to or commenting on the findings and in helping develop outputs.
