Setting the record straight: Why records management matters more than PR
Campaigning journalist Heather Brooke discusses the nefarious rise of PR and compares the amounts spent on spin versus the recording and dissemination of ‘just the facts’. She will argue that PR is only ever a bandage on a problem and to maintain a reputation for efficiency and trustworthiness an organisation must invest in records management and transparency. To take such a route requires strong leadership and vision which she argues is sadly lacking in many public institutions. Spin may seem the best use of resources in the short term but she argues that secrecy, poor record-keeping and treating the public with contempt inevitably lead to the sort of major scandals that result in complete reputational breakdown. She will cite various examples from Parliament, the police and other public bodies as evidence.
