Death by Email
So we all think we know how to use email and that everyone else is the problem when it comes to email communication. But do we really know the cause of the issues and what the issues are? The keynote speech will take us on an interactive journey that identifies implications of email communication for employees and organisations.
Many organisations worldwide are benefiting from the use of electronic mail (e-mail) for workplace communication. However employees continue to report multifarious e-mail concerns (“e-mail defects”) including ambiguous unclear messages, e-mail overload, security and privacy issues, and e-mail interruptions. Such e-mail defects can affect employee productivity and satisfaction, organisational costs and even organisational performance, and therefore should be managed. But, how does an organisation go about doing this?
The keynote speech will take a colourful journey through communication within the workplace and how it is effecting organisations. In particular, looking at email optimisation and getting the most from the tool we are starting to hate. The talk will explore the effectiveness of training employees in efficient use of e-mail at four medium-to-large UK organisations, using seminar-based training (SBT) and computer-based training (CBT) delivery modes. The findings suggest that such training results in significant improvements in e-mail use and provides a preliminary indication that a combined SBT and CBT delivery mode for e-mail training may be more effective in the longer term than just SBT.
As the journey continues, email communication will be explored for potential benefits within the knowledge management domain. Is it possible to utilise the content of email for other purposes, such as identifying experts within an organisation? Finally, as the journey draws to a close, the keynote speech will cover the future of email and the effect it might have on employee health, the organisation and society.
