eArchiving : The Central Electronic Archive (CEA) beyond retirement AND Long Term Preservation of Electronic Documents
In 1995 the concept of the Central Electronic Archive (CEA) was developed in Sandwich under the direction of three well known former and current RMS members. The genesis of a new form of electronic archiving began with concern about the long term archival and preservation of electronic files stored initially on floppy disks, tape and project shares then followed by optical disks, cd’s and finally dvd’s.
Over the 14 year lifespan of the CEA the eArchiving process evolved within the Information & Records Management team and over that time 2.7 terabytes, over seven hundred thousand files, were archived by over 200 users. The aim of this presentation is to share the experiences that the CEA retirement project team have had over the past eleven months, especially during the data migration phase which confirmed some of the risks and issues that were highlighted back in 1995. Back to the Future was certainly the case when migrating and in some cases restoring files archived nearly a decade ago and it can be said that these issues are set to challenge business for many years to come.
